The €80 New Normal
Do you remember when a 'Big Box' board game cost €45? It feels like a distant memory from a different era. Today, walking into a hobby shop or browsing online feels like a test of financial discipline.
The price of cardboard has exploded. Between the rising costs of paper pulp, the logistical nightmare of shipping containers from China, and general inflation, the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of our favorite hobby has shifted permanently. A standard expert-level Euro-game now sits comfortably at €70 or €80. A Kickstarter 'All-In' pledge can easily breach €200.
For the dedicated gamer, this poses a serious problem. We don't want to play fewer games. We don't want to stop collecting. But our budgets aren't growing as fast as the price tags.
Last week, we talked about mapping the physical world of shops (our Verification Phase). Today, we are announcing the next step in the Boardoro roadmap: **The Deals Engine.**
We are building the technology to help you stretch your hobby budget further, without destroying the local ecosystem.
Why Generic Price Comparison Fails Us
You might ask: "Why do I need Boardoro? I can just check Google Shopping or Idealo."
If you are buying a toaster or a pair of sneakers, those sites are great. But for board games and TCGs, they are fundamentally broken. Here is why the generic engines fail the tabletop test:
- The Language Trap: You see a copy of 'Wingspan' for €35. You click the link, excited. It turns out to be the Polish or French import version. Generic scrapers often ignore the language tag, which is critical for text-heavy games.
- The Expansion Confusion: You search for 'Ark Nova', and the cheapest result is €25. Amazing deal? No. It’s just the 'Marine Worlds' expansion, but the algorithm can't tell the difference between the core box and the add-on.
- The 'Out of Stock' Phantom: Generic sites often list prices from shops that haven't had the item in stock for six months. They drive traffic to dead ends.
We are building a specialized engine. We are teaching our code to understand the difference between a Starter Set and a Booster Box. We are teaching it that a German rulebook matters.
How the Boardoro Deals Engine Works
We are currently developing direct API integrations and specialized scrapers for the top 8-12 German tabletop retailers. We aren't interested in the giants who treat board games like commodities. We are focusing on the specialists—the shops like FantasyWelt, Spieletaxi, Taschengelddieb, and others who actually care about the condition of the box they ship to you.
Our goal is to track price history, not just current price. We want to answer the question: **"Is this actually a deal?"**
Because of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), publishers often drive hype to get pre-orders. But often, the price drops 20% three months after release. Our historical data will help you decide: Do I need this on Day 1, or can I wait for the drop?
The 'Local' Twist: Why Cheapest Isn't Always Best
This is where Boardoro differs from every other deal site. We have a conscience.
If you save €5 on a game online, but pay €5.90 in shipping, you haven't saved anything. More importantly, you've deprived your Local Game Store (LGS) of revenue.
Our Deals Engine will feature a 'Hybrid Calculation'. When you look at a price, we will calculate:
- The True Online Cost: Price + Shipping - Bundle Discounts.
- The Local Advantage: We will cross-reference the verified shops from our directory (Phase 1). If a shop within 5km of you has the game, we will show you that option next to the online deal.
Maybe the local shop is €3 more expensive. But you get it today. No waiting for DHL. No damaged corners. And you keep your community hub alive. We believe that is a premium worth paying, and we want to make that choice transparent.
The Roadmap: When Can I Use It?
We are currently in the coding phase. We are testing our scrapers to ensure they are respectful to the shop servers and accurate for you.
Our target is to launch the Beta version of the Deals Engine in late Q2 2026. We will start with the 'Top 100' most popular games on BoardGameGeek and expand from there.
In the meantime, the best way to catch deals is manual. That is why we have launched our **Telegram and Discord Deal Alerts**. While the bots are being built, our team is manually curating the best offers every morning.
We are watching the sales so you don't have to refresing the page every hour.
Join the Hunt
The market is tough right now. Prices are high. But the deals are out there if you know where to look.
We are building Boardoro to be the tool we always wanted: intelligent, specialized, and supportive of the local scene. We are done with bad data and fake sales.
Keep your eyes on the site. The engine is warming up.
